AFRINIC is indeed one of the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). RIRs are organizations that manage, allocate, and distribute Internet number resources, such as IP addresses and Autonomous System Numbers, within designated regions around the world. Specifically, AFRINIC serves the African region.

The primary role of an RIR like AFRINIC includes the allocation of IP address blocks to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other organizations within its geographical scope, as well as the maintenance of a public database that records these allocations and related information. This ensures efficient distribution and utilization of IP addresses in a way that enhances connectivity and resilience across the Internet.

In contrast, the other options listed represent different types of organizations. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) oversees global IP address allocation and domain name system management but is not an RIR itself. NANOG (North American Network Operators' Group) is a community of network operators but does not serve as an RIR, while ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) is another RIR focused on North America, separate from AFRINIC.
